Heptafluoropropane is a gaseous fire suppressant that leaves no residue, is non-conductive, and generally does not cause secondary contamination (unlike dry‑powder extinguishers, which leave a dusty, sooty residue). It is an excellent agent for extinguishing fires involving electronic equipment, precision instruments, valuable apparatus, and paper‑, silk‑, or magnetic‑media‑based information carriers such as archives and books. At its design extinguishing concentration—no less than 1.3 times the minimum required level—it has virtually no adverse effects on humans (whereas IG‑541 and carbon dioxide are toxic at their extinguishing concentrations), making it suitable for use in occupied spaces such as libraries—applications where carbon‑dioxide systems are unsuitable.
During fire suppression, its extinguishing rate is faster than that of carbon dioxide and IG‑541, both gaseous extinguishing agents. Moreover, it requires lower extinguishing and inerting concentrations than these two agents. Consequently, for the same fire, fewer cylinders are needed in a gas‑extinguishing system, resulting in a smaller footprint and simpler installation requirements. It also allows for flexible deployment of cabinet‑type extinguishing systems—whereas both IG‑541 and carbon‑dioxide systems typically require a larger number of cylinders to deliver adequate extinguishing capacity.
Heptafluoropropane fire suppression typically completes within one minute, with no re‑ignition after extinguishment (asphyxiating agents are prone to reignition). A 4‑kg dry‑powder fire extinguisher costs around 70 yuan, while installing a 4‑kg heptafluoropropane system starts at over 500 yuan. Recharging heptafluoropropane is significantly more expensive than refilling IG‑541 or carbon dioxide systems.
